Giveaway + Free Listening Center Ideas!

Have you ever had a "magical" tool that engages students to make learning fun?  I have been using the Easi-Speak USB Recorder by Learning Resources.  My students LOVED this kid-friend microphone.  As a teacher, I loved that it didn't require batteries- just plug it directly into your USB port on your computer to charge while uploading files.
I had an autistic student in my class this year, and the end of the school year was a challenge.  He had recently decided that he didn't really want to attend guided reading groups.  The Easi-Speak Recorder was my incentive for him to participate.  He LOVED holding the microphone and reading into it during guided reading.  I also appreciated the self correction that the microphone provided.  The microphone can record up to 64 tracks (4 hours) at a time!  The students could record themselves reading a passage, and then play it back instantly.  I noticed a big improvement in fluency and expression!
The files could also be recorded for data, uploaded to the class website, or even be used to create a digital storybook!  Audacity is free software that could be downloaded to work in conjunction with the Easi-Speak Recorder.

I really wish I would have had this resource last year!  I had a student in my class last year with selective mutism.  She never spoke a single word to me all year long.  She was very timid, but I believe this device would have helped her.  I did record her, but this is much more kid-friendly!  Students want to use this exciting technology.

We also used this device during buddy reading and to practice Accelerated Reader books.  The students really enjoyed listening to themselves and each other.  I plan to have "mystery readers" record books for our listening center using the Easi-Speak Recorder.  The "mystery readers" can be anyone around your school: the principal, office staff, related arts teachers, custodians, cafeteria workers, other teachers.... Simply have them read a book into the Easi-Speak Recorder and you have a digital file!   Have the mystery readers reveal their identity at the end of the recording. You could add background music and create CDs or use mp3 files with iPods!

The potential of this amazing little device is limitless.  Your students will be engaged and excited about learning!  I highly recommend this product.

I would love to have this tool for my first grade students. This year my grade level collegue had a student with Selective Mutism. I feel that something like this would help boost her self-esteem and lesson anxiety about speaking. This would allow for the teacher to better access the student's reading level.

Overall, this is just an amazing tool for all students as they learn to read more fluently.

ahowell36@gmail.com

I would really love one or two of these in my classroom. My school is starting the Daily 5 program this year. I have been trying to come up with different ideas for our listening centers. I have begun to record myself reading some books. I think it would be great for students to be able to hear how they read, but in turn to use there recordings for other students to listening to.
