Challenging Advanced Students: Mastery Challenge/Scorpion Challenge

At my school, we do pretty well reaching struggling learners.  Wanna guess who has the least amount of gains?  That's right, the advanced crowd.  I just came across a great idea to push these kids a little more, and I wanted to share:

The students receive one advanced question each week.  Every student receives the question in their S.E.A. binder (Student Enjoying Academics- more about this later) and they have one week to research the answer.  They can turn it once a week with their homework.  If they receive the correct answer, they get one sticker and a point in their notebook.  Hall of Famers are permanently posted on the class website.
Mrs. Renz does not have her students turn in any work, but rather memorize the question and tell her the answer at lunch or recess.
I love this idea of challenging students, and that all students have the opportunity to participate.  The challenge questions I have seen so far are at least on a second grade level.  If you have seen any that would be suitable for first graders, or if you know of any appropriate resources, let me know!  :)  I would really like to try this next year.
